A CLEANSING HEART

Scripture:

"But the things that come out of the mouth come from
the heart, and these make a man unclean"
(Matthew 15: 18).

Reflection:

Brushing one's teeth and gargling with mouthwash may
be as close as many people ever come to getting clean
on the inside. But brushing and gargling do not come
close to reaching the heart of the problem. Instead
Jesus prescribes is the "heart washing"--the cleansing
work of the Holy Spirit.(Titus 3:5).

And a clean heart is the only cleanliness that can truly
lead to godliness!

Prayer:

Oh Lord, may I always experience the cleansing work of
the Holy Spirit. May my heart be cleansed in your sight.
Amen

LIVING AND DYING

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that
Christ Jesus came into this world to save sinners, of whom
I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in
me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display His perfect
patience as an example to those who were to believe in Him for
eternal life. 1 Timothy 1:15-16

For what would you be ready to die? If a person answers that
question about dying, he will also find what should be his
priorities for living.

I remember a story a brother pastor told me many years ago. It
was from a time before cars were equipped with air bags, seat
belts, and child seats were still decades away. He had been
driving home when he came upon an accident. The first thing he
saw was a little girl, about five years old, covered in blood.

The blood on the child was not hers.

The blood had come from her mother. Amazingly, the little girl
had hardly been scratched. What had happened was this: the
mother and daughter had been traveling down a two-lane gravel
road when their car was hit by a drunk driver who had veered into
their lane.

In the last moment before the cars collided, when avoidance
maneuvers were no longer going to work, that mother had thrown
herself across her daughter. When the vehicles slammed together,
it was the mother's body that slammed into the car's dashboard;
it was the mother's head which smashed into the windshield.

That mother's instinctual love had made her willing to give her all,
even her life, to save her daughter.

Loving sacrifice had shown itself in that mother who threw herself
between her daughter and the disaster of a car wreck. In this
selfless act she is not alone. When mothers look at their children,
they see the future. They see possibilities; they see dreams; they
see a chance to change the world for the better. And because of
what they see in their children, many mothers would be ready to
die for them.

But would they die for someone else's child?

That number, while not inconsequential, is a smaller one. It would
be smaller still if the life that needed saving belonged to a child who
was the neighborhood bully -- a child who had frequently picked on
and beat up a mother's own children. Yes, the number of moms
ready to sacrifice for such a child would diminish in such
circumstances.

Here it should be noted that Jesus Christ, God's innocent Son,
came into this world to give His life to save sinners.

* In so doing, Jesus gave His life to rescue the worst of us, and not
just the best.

* He came to redeem the ungrateful, as well as those who were
naturally appreciative.

* He came for those who had spent most of their lifetime rejecting
and mocking Him, as well as those who can never remember a time
when Jesus hadn't been their Savior.

In other words, no matter who you are, no matter what your
circumstance or situation, Jesus came to forgive your sins, save
your soul, and offer you eternal life.

THE PRAYER:

Dear Lord, I make no claim to being the best person this world has
produced. My sins are many, and I am unable to change the smallest
of them. Today I give thanks You were willing to live and die to save
me. In Your Name. Amen.

DRAW OUT THE BEST

By Pastor Bobby Schuller

"Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from
God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows
God."      1 John 4:7

To see like Jesus, you have to see the best in people. I
hope you know that Jesus sees the best in you.

This is exactly what made Jesus amazing. Everywhere he
went in his ministry, he was always seeing the best in what
others called the worst. Matthew was a tax collector, right?
There were people that he called into his circle that were
hated and rejected, especially by religious people. These
people were unloved, disliked, nobody believed them, but
Jesus saw the best in them.

And, Jesus sees the best in you, too. Because Jesus sees
good in you, now do your best to see the best in others. Let
me tell you something: When you see the worst in people,
you will draw the worst out of them. When you see the best
in people, you will draw the best out of them. It is true. Be l
ike Jesus and draw out only the best in all you meet.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for seeing the good in me.
Your love brings out my best. May I follow your example
and see the best in others. Amen.

Reflection: When you've encouraged another by seeing only
their best, what was their reaction?

DON'T ASSUME

I'm not going to defend everything we
Christians have done over the centuries.
We can be silly, spiteful and stupid. We
have our flaws, our fallacies, our falsehoods,
and a full set of foibles. We're not perfect;
we're not even pretty close to being perfect.
We probably deserve much of what is said
about us.
But it is a very big mistake to assume
because God's people mess up, God has done
the same.
He hasn't. In His perfect love He sent His
perfect Son to live a perfect life so all who
believe on Him might enjoy His perfect
forgiveness. There are no slip ups or stumbles
in the creation and execution of the Lord's
plan, which saves. And we, like brother need
to be bold in sharing that truth with the
world's doubters.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks You
are beyond our measurement or understanding.
Your thoughts are above ours, and we need to
remember You are the Creator, Redeemer and
Sanctifier. For all You have done, most hearty
thanks. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

In Christ I remain His servant and yours,

NARCISSIST IN CHIEF

Donald Trump is a real estate mogul for whom the word
"egomaniac" is an understatement. But when America’s
narcissist in chief says he also wants to become
commander in chief, the country pays attention. And
that’s what Trump wanted to have happen. Here is what
Trump said in his announcement that he is running to
add the presidency to his list of successes:

"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending
their best. ...They're bringing drugs. They're bringing
crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good
people."

When challenged on the inaccuracy, outrageousness,
and viciousness of his remarks, "The Donald"
characteristically doubled down and claimed to be the
nation’s only truth-teller, then attacked everyone who
dared to challenge him.

Nice of Trump to assume, I thought, that some of the
11 million undocumented immigrants who live such
vulnerable lives in this country might be good people.
But obviously Trump doesn’t know any of them.

Jesus talks about immigrants when he refers to
welcoming "the stranger," and says that how we treat
them is how we treat him (Matthew 25:31-46).

GOOD MORNING GOD

When and how do you pray?

It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises
to the Most High. It is good to proclaim your unfailing
love in the morning, your faithfulness in the evening,
accompanied by the harp and lute and the harmony
of the lyre. You thrill me, Lord, with all you have done
for me! I sing for joy because of what you have done.
Psalm 92:1-4 NLT

Giving thanks morning and night

What a way to start the day! The verses in Psalm 92
represent one of the first prayers on the priests' lips
on the Sabbath day: "You thrill me, Lord, with all you
have done for me!"

What if before you read your morning paper, before
you head out the door, before you start the countless
tasks you have to do for each day, you determine that
you're going to start your day with praise for how God
has "thrilled" you? Right now, you have the chance to
start afresh. A new day is before you. Why not start
things off right with a regimen of praise instead of the
old routine? In prayer today, proclaim his unfailing love,
and tonight, before going to bed, praise him again for
his faithfulness.

GIVE MR COURAGE TO

Verse

Learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed,
defend the orphan, plead for the widow.
Isaiah 1:17

Voice

People do not choose rebellion; it is forced upon them.
Revolution is an act of self-defense.
C.T. Vivian

Prayer

O God, give us the courage to seek justice, rescue the
oppressed, defend the orphan, and plead for the widow.
May we always be willing to learn to do good. May we
always be willing to rebel against the unjust structures
of our world. Amen.

CELEBRATION

"For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was
lost, and is found." And they began to celebrate.
Luke 15:24

Zella Jackson Price had already lost a son during a
premature birth.

Because of that she was deeply concerned when, only
seven months into her next pregnancy, she was rushed
to the Homer G. Phillips Hospital in St. Louis. About an
hour after the baby, Diane, was born, the doctors paid
her a visit and said things didn't look good for the 2.3
pound baby.

As this was 50 years ago and before modern medicine
had made great strides in the care of early births, Price
was not shocked when a nurse came in and said, "Your
daughter has passed away."

Looking back on that day, Price says, "I experienced the
same sinking feeling when they told me my son died, so
I didn't question it. I left that hospital thinking another one
of my babies had died. I felt that sense of loss, and I was
heartbroken. But I did what anyone else would do: I went
home and went on with my life."

Price ended up having three more babies; all of whom have
done well.

That's the way Price's life might have stayed if it hadn't been
for the fact that the children of adopted Melanie Diane
Jackson wanted to find her biological parents. They wanted
to surprise their mother with that information for her 50th
birthday.

So if you've stayed with me so far, you already know the rest
of the story.

Somebody at the hospital had goofed. Maybe a lot of
somebodies goofed a lot of times. Price's baby didn't die.
No, she was adopted some 50 years ago. Her baby was told
her mother had abandoned her.

But that was then and this is now. Now mother and daughter
are reunited. To paraphrase our text above: for this my
daughter was dead, and is alive again; she was lost, and is
found. And they began to celebrate. DNA samples have
proven they really are mother and daughter. No doubt, no
uncertainty.

Oh, there's one other thing they did: they gave thanks to God.

When Price found out her daughter was alive, she said, "To
God be the glory!" Price's grandson, Samuel, said, "All the
glory goes to God." And that's the way it should be: the Lord
getting praise for this reunion of family.

But there's one more thought I'd like to give you before this
devotion ends. Many of us are surrounded by God-given
children and grandchildren. They are healthy; they are happy,
and we have never been separated.

It occurs to me that if a family which has lost 50 years together
can celebrate, maybe we who have always been together ought
to do the same ... and more. Let us give thanks to our Heavenly
Father, and our dear Brother and Savior Jesus, for His ongoing
protection and grace.

THE PRAYER:

Dear Lord, grant that I, a blood-bought member of Your family of
faith, be faithful. Further, let me be thankful for all the tragedies
that have never happened in my life. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
